Re:Soap coloring - 2009/04/15 19:35 Hi there Harvest Moon, coconut oil is normally white not orangey so I would say that you have something weird going on there.

There is a fine balance in the perfect soap formula. You have to work out which oils are light, then what percentage of oils to use. What % is conditioning, hard, lathers, superfat etc... Coconut oil for example is normally light in colour but if you use too much in your soap it will dry out the skin of your customers - then they wont come back.

Most soap makers spend years working out their base formula and I'm sorry to say there are no short cuts.
Making soap is easy, making good soap consistently is hard. I wouldn't consider selling soap until I had at least 100 batches experience because there are so many variables and things that can go wrong. Imagine a customer buying a soap with lye pockets in it? Or lye heavy?

In the mean time enjoy your new addiction and fun with your experiments.

Oh and edited to add - There's already a company called Harvest Moon. http://www.hmsoapworks.com/index.php
and unless your affilated with them they might get tetchy about copy write infringement if you decide to trade under that name. I think they have been around for a few years.

Cheers
belle
