Re:Problem with sheep milk soap - 2009/05/16 16:56 Hi Denise,

I did use some Palm oil (10 percent) together with olive oil (60 percent) and coconut oil (30 percent). I did not know that certain oils lend a hardening quality to the soap. Any recommendations on a source where I could get such information concerning different fats and oils?

With little experience but great enthusiasm I have narrowed the solution to my soap batch concerns to one of three possibilities --- of course then there are all of the other possibilities about which I don’t know as yet.

1. As you say --- just needs more time. I’m not throwing anything away yet.

2. I wondered if I had added enough lye. The original recipe called for 4.8 oz but when I ran it through the lye cal. at the Majestic Sage site 4.8 was at the low end of the Percent of Excess Fat column, logging in at 1/2 percent excess fat. As a new soaper, and one working with milk, I felt more confident sliding down to the middle of the range – and so went with 4.58 oz. However, as sheep’s milk has 6.4 percent fat compared to goat’s 3.5 – 5 percent fat, do you think maybe my formula was a little shy on the lye?

3. Do you think there is any problem with keeping the lye milk solution at such a low temperature when I am mixing it up (never got over 72 degrees until I purposely raised it to 89-90 degrees when I was ready to soap)?

Well Denise, I guess my real dilemma is that I am dying to make another batch of soap and just can’t wait three weeks to see it in deed this batch did work. For one thing it's getting to be late spring, the lambs are weaned and I have milk coming out my ears. Is there anything you might adjust in the recipe I described before I give it another shot or any words of milk soap wisdom?

Thanks very much
